Does anyone have any tips for IBS or chronic constipation that worked for them? I have no other solutions! Like many of my fellow IBS soldiers, I have tried exercise (cardio is no longer an option because of an autoimmune disease and nerve damage I have, though while I could do it, it helped some), dieting, Metamucil, laxatives, Linzess, and meditation, and nothing offered a good or long-term solution. What boggles me is that nothing I can think of really changed - I even tried taking it with more food, water, and Tums, but worse it got regardless. I have been on chemo drugs that didn't make me nearly that bad off. It got to the point where it was a sweating, shaking, laying-on-the-cold-tile-bathroom-floor-begging-for-it-to-end kind of vomiting nausea with diarrhea, and I couldn't take it anymore. However, about a week ago, I gradually started becoming increasingly nauseous with every dose. Has anyone else had a sudden bad reaction to Amitiza? I was taking it for weeks with some manageable nausea as a side effect, and it seemed to be working well enough. Hello all! I have been diagnosed with IBS-C recently, compounded on with chronic constipation from medication I have to take, and I'm hoping for some tips or commiseration. Lubiprostone is a safe and efficacious drug for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation, with limited adverse effects in 3 months of follow-up.Ĭopyright © 2016 Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research. Adverse effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea were common (incidence rate, 2.4%-75%) however, the incidence of serious adverse effects was low (<5%) and was mostly unrelated to lubiprostone treatment. At 3 months, except for abdominal bloating (P=.03), there was no difference between lubiprostone and placebo groups in all other outcomes (P≥.05). We found that lubiprostone treatment significantly improved the severity of constipation, stool consistency, abdominal pain, degree of straining, and abdominal bloating at 1 week (P≤.03) and 1 month (P≤.004), except for abdominal pain at 1 month, which was similar to that when treated with placebo (P=.21). Of 246 studies identified, data from 9 trials comprising 1468 patients (63.6%) in the lubiprostone group and 841 (36.4%) in the placebo group were analyzed. Efficacy outcomes evaluated at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months of intervention were weekly frequency of spontaneous bowel movements, severity of constipation, consistency of stools, degree of abdominal pain/discomfort, degree of straining, and abdominal bloating. Relevant studies meeting the inclusion criteria were manually searched by 2 independent reviewers. We performed a literature search of the MEDLINE, Cochrane, Google Scholar, and databases (from January 1, 2005, through January 31, 2015). ![]() To evaluate the efficacy and safety of lubiprostone in the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C).
